[Arrangement of buildings according to the surrounding environment and the connection with eight gardens]
The site is located near the center of the downtown in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The area of the site is large enough for a house. However, if I satisfy all the conditions desired by the owner, the house would be far bigger than the surrounding houses. Therefore, I made a plan for a house that exists in harmony with the surrounding environment instead of planning one huge building.
First, I arranged units in a square according to the borders of the site and a cloister for the spaces between rooms so that the residents could enjoy the courtyard and the garden. The size of each unit is adjusted to the surrounding environment, and the arrangement of units was decided according to various life scenes and by making stories to cope with any lifestyle changes in the future. It is a building plan of separate blocks, but the eyes of the residents are led to the large courtyard in the center, which creates a sense of integration for the residence. When the windows facing the garden are opened, the wind comes through, and the residents can enjoy the rustling of the leaves, the fragrance of the flowers, and the chirping of birds that visit the garden as if they were in nature even in their rooms. The eight gardens created from the spaces between the units have their own characteristics of scale, height, lighting, and wind. Thus, the residents can enjoy various expressions according to the changing seasons.
